Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the foundation for success in our intimate, family, social, or work relationship as well as success in our creative, productive life. Emotional intelligence involves factors affecting both our own emotions as well as the emotions of others.

The fundamentals of emotional intelligence include:

  • Emotion perception – ability to identify accurately our own emotional states and the emotions experienced by others.

  • Emotion dynamics – ability to understand the factors that cause emotional states to change in ourself and others.

  • Emotion regulation – ability to monitor and modify our own emotions and associated thoughts.

  • Emotion management – ability to respond adaptively to the emotions of others (e.g., exhibit accurate empathy, manage conflict) and affect change in interpersonal dynamics.
